Generation Game
New age discrimination legislation being introduced next month is causing debate in boardrooms, HR teams and pubs across the country. People are concerned about how it affects them, what they can and can’t say or do, and what their legal responsibilities are.
However, there’s a far more interesting and positive approach to take to age diversity within organisations, but it needs to viewed as just that, an opportunity to have a wider base of skills, knowledge and experience through diversity.
Predaptive has a view on diversity. It’s not about filling quotas and ensuring that marketing materials have a representative balance of employees from each interest group. It’s about bringing the different perspectives, viewpoints and strengths of all your employees together to build a stronger organisation.
Managers can find it difficult to manage a diverse team, feeling that they need to treat everyone in exactly the same way to ensure compliance, but what employees look for is fairness and consistency, not robotic management. People at different life-stages have different needs from work, and bring different things to the workplace.
Recognising diversity as a constructive aspect of the modern workplace to be leveraged, rather than a legislative nightmare to be complied with not only makes for a more positive working atmosphere, but also releases managers to get the best from their teams, whatever their make up.
