Complexity Doesn’t Have To Be Complicated

We live in an increasingly complex world.  The availability of more information than anyone can process has not made life simpler for people in organisations.  Legislation is not decreasing and customers, consumers, communities and employees are not shy about using it.  Managers are dealing with more and more conflicting demands from differing stakeholders.

The situation is not helped by much of the language that has emerged in business to surround it.  People in organisations can get into a habit of using a baffling array of catchphrases which they’ve picked up, and perhaps misunderstood and misinterpreted along the way, so they mean different things to different people.

Whilst ‘rain check’, ‘top of the ninth’, ‘seventh inning stretch’ and ‘left field’ may mean something to a Tigers fan who will know how something will play in Peoria, they don’t necessarily make a situation easier to understand in a meeting in Maidstone.

American sports aren’t the only ways to confuse people, military slang used outside of the military often makes little sense to people and technical scientific terms applied to everyday situations ‘push the envelope’ of understanding in the workplace.

To make sense of a complex world clarity matters, whether it’s in the terms used, processes deployed, or the frameworks your organization uses to manage people.
