The training cycle is module one on any training and development qualification course.  It’s essential that people understand that training is more than just a fun training course and a happy sheet.  However, it can mean that people feel that training is doomed to be a cyclical activity that is going to happen the same way with the same results every time.

Unfortunately, in some cases, that’s exactly what the training cycle is!  It’s not surprising then, that sometimes employees show a cynical attitude towards training, viewing it either as a waste of time or a fun day out with a nice lunch (maybe even golf if it’s the sales directors), rather than a learning opportunity.

A more successful approach is to think about the learning framework, focussing less on the training and more on what the organisation needs from its people, and what they need from it.

Designing learning around what’s important to the organisation and the participants makes far more sense than designing it around what the trainer enjoys and what the training department feels comfortable with.  Few training departments will admit to taking the second option, but it’s all too often the reality.

Real results from training come when people are involved and engaged with their learning, seeing a real link between any training they do and their objectives, their appraisal, their employability and most importantly their long term success.  Participants who can contribute to the organisation’s learning and help to define what’s needed for themselves for the future demonstrate real commitment not only to learning, but also to the organisation.  So what does the learning framework look like?
