Making Sense of Management Speak
Although you don’t learn it at school alongside French, Spanish and Chinese, Management has developed a language all of its own. Sometimes it makes business easier, acting as convenient shorthand to convey difficult concepts quickly, but more often it adds to confusion.
We often encounter management terms which seem to make no sense, or that are being used in the wrong context but are being used because they’re the latest buzzword or because an admired colleague used them. Often we’ll check with others what they mean and we’ll be given lots of different definitions, sometimes very contradictory.
So where do you go to find out what sensible business terms in a people and organisational development context mean?
Predaptive have begun compiling an Organisational Development Glossary, designed to help you make sense of the baffling array of HR and business terms. It’s growing fast and we’d like your contributions. If you’d like us to add a term, or if you’ve heard a business expression that you’d like explained, let us know. We’ll be adding to it every week so to request an inclusion please contact claudinem@predaptive.com.
