Values on a Tour de Farce

Doing the numbers simply isn’t enough in a competitive environment.  Businesses need to focus on doing those numbers sustainably.  It’s summertime and the Tour de France is well on its way.  We thought the big story would be who would come out of Lance Armstrong’s shadow, and looked forward to a battle between Basso and Ullrich, but neither started the Tour, and the teams are in disarray as key riders are suspended because of links to drugs.

Managing remote teams is never easy, and when there’s egos involved it can be even tougher.  One of the key problems we see in organisations is talented individuals behaving in ways that are completely inappropriate to the organisational culture, damaging relationships within the business, generating unnecessary work for others and creating compliance risks.  Yet their managers tolerate the behaviour because they’re ‘doing the numbers’, much as a blind eye is turned to ‘nutritionalists’ when sports team members are performing well.

This approach can work in the short term, but tends to become destructive with the strongest personalities taking over the business without necessarily adding any long term value.  For an organisation to create real value for the future it needs to create a real values driven culture for itself, one that self regulates through positive peer pressure.

Organisations with a clear and embedded values system no only run less risk of maverick employees creating problems, they have also been shown to increase shareholder value and create better, more sustainable profits over the long term.
